Why 6061 Aluminum Plate Is the First Choice for Most CNC Machined Parts | Cause Analysis
2026-08-10 14:18:28

Why does 6061 aluminum alloy have a significantly higher presence in fields such as automated equipment, mechanical processing, hardware molds, automotive parts, architectural decoration, and new energy?

The answer is: It balances strength, toughness, machinability, weldability, and corrosion resistance.

Basic Definition & Composition of 6061 Aluminum Alloy

6061 belongs to the 6000 series (Al-Mg-Si series) aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy and is a thermally treatable deformation aluminum alloy. It is a mature and widely applicable medium-strength industrial aluminum material currently available on the market. Its strength falls between the soft 5 series rust-proof aluminum and the high-strength 2 series/7 series aerospace aluminum, offering balanced performance in rust resistance, welding, machining, and surface treatment.

Core Advantages of 6061 Aluminum for CNC machining

Golden Balance Between Structural Strength and Lightweight

6061 is a heat-treatable Al-Mg-Si alloy with a tensile strength of 290–310 MPa and yield strength of 240–276 MPa in the T6 condition, along with a hardness of ≥95 HB, meeting structural load-bearing requirements. Its density is only 2.7 g/cm³, approximately 60% lighter than steel, and its specific strength approaches that of low-alloy steel, offering significant advantages in lightweight applications such as automobiles and 3C products.

Compared to ultra-high-strength aluminum alloys like 7075, 6061 offers moderate strength and better toughness, making it less prone to cracking during machining due to stress concentration. In contrast to 6063, it boasts higher strength, greater load-bearing capacity, and a broader range of applications.

Excellent CNC Machinability, Outperforming Peer Aluminum Alloys

6061 is a "friendly" material for CNC machining, with low cutting resistance, easy chip breakage, non stick cutting, and a machining efficiency about 40% higher than 6063. It is suitable for high-speed cutting, with slow tool wear, and can stably achieve complex processes such as milling, drilling, tapping, and carving.

T651 state is pre stretched to eliminate internal stress, with good dimensional stability after processing, and thin-walled and high-precision parts are not easily deformed. Compared to 2 series and 7 series aluminum alloys, 6061 has better weldability, with joint strength reaching 70% to 80% of the base material, no risk of hot cracking, and is suitable for integrated manufacturing of structural components.

Strong Corrosion Resistance & Perfect Post-Processing Compatibility

6061 surface is prone to forming dense oxide film, with good corrosion resistance in atmospheric, freshwater, and marine environments, no risk of stress corrosion cracking, and can be used for a long time without additional anti-corrosion measures. It has excellent anodizing performance, uniform oxide film, strong adhesion, and can be colored into multiple colors, balancing aesthetics and wear resistance.

At the same time, it is compatible with various surface treatments such as spraying, electroplating, and drawing, meeting the appearance and functional requirements of 3C shells, automotive accessories, industrial equipment, and more.

Outstanding Cost Performance & Stable Supply Chain

6061 is the most mature aluminum alloy grade for mass production, with complete specifications for plates, rods, and profiles, convenient procurement, and stable prices, far lower than special aluminum materials such as 7075 and 2024. Its processing technology is mature, without the need for special cutting tools or strict parameters, with low scrap rate and low comprehensive manufacturing cost, suitable for the entire process from prototype sampling to mass production.

Conventional Status & Key Performance Parameters of 6061 Aluminum

The state selection of 6061 aluminum alloy can follow the following principles: O state or T4 state can be considered for large deformation forming; T4 state is usually chosen to balance formability and certain strength; Extruded profiles are commonly in T4, T5, and T6 states; T6 state is commonly used for general structural components and ordinary CNC machining; Priority should be given to T651 state for precision board processing.

But the 6061 aluminum plate commonly used in CNC machining is in T6 state, which is currently the most mainstream and practical material state. After T6 aging treatment, 6061 aluminum material undergoes solid solution heat treatment and artificial aging, resulting in stable mechanical properties and optimal balance of hardness, toughness, and processing stability.

The core standard parameters of 6061-T6 aluminum are as follows, which intuitively confirms its advantages in adapting to CNC Precision Machining:

Density: 2.70 g/cm ³ (lightweight texture, suitable for weight reducing structural components)

Tensile strength: ≥ 310 MPa (excellent structural load-bearing capacity)

Yield strength: ≥ 276 MPa (stable performance, not easily deformed)

Elongation rate: 8% -10% (moderate toughness, no tearing during cutting)

Hardness: 95-110 HB (optimal hardness range for CNC machining)

Corrosion resistance: excellent (suitable for complex working conditions)

FAQs About 6061 aluminum CNC machining

Why is 6061 aluminum the most popular material for CNC machining?

6061 aluminum achieves a perfect balance of strength, weight, machinability, corrosion resistance and cost. It has stable performance, easy processing, rich post-processing options and sufficient supply, making it the universal material for most CNC custom parts.

What is the difference between 6061 and 6063 aluminum in CNC machining?

6061 has higher structural strength and better stability, suitable for structural parts. 6063 is softer, mainly used for profile and decorative parts. 6061 has wider applicability for functional CNC parts.

Is 6061 aluminum cost-effective for mass CNC production?
